Space & Sound Exhibit: Teebs

For his exhibit here in Honolulu, Los Angeles artist and producer, Teebs will unveil his newest collection of artfully repurposed record sleeves at The ARTS at Marks Garage, this time on sleeve pieces from old Hawaiian records found at local thrift stores here in Hawai‘i. Exploring the relationship between music and art, Teebs has become known for combining paint, markers, stenciling, collage, gold foil and rust with the record’s original artwork to breathe new life into the dusty sleeves.

In his music, there’s a deeply rooted sound that connects with our everyday surroundings. It spotlights emotional corners and builds warmth over the listener. His artwork echoes this same feeling in a visual medium. Rich in color, complex, yet leaving enough breathing room for its subjects to shine.

The opening event commences this First Friday, August 6, 2010 at The ARTS at Marks Garage, with music by Oliver Twist, Kavet The Catalyst and Trav15. After 9pm there will be a showing of Dublab’s Secondhand Sureshots documentary and a special performance by Teebs and Vezzen. All ages, $5 after 9pm.

Faces and Places

NEW DATE! FLUX Hawaii’s photo project documenting the diversity that is Chinatown.

About FLUX’s Faces and Places Project

Historically, Chinatowns were a place of cultural insularity. A starting point for people unfamiliar with their host city’s language and customs to find solidarity with others just like them. Today, our Chinatown is increasingly diverse. Bar and restaurant owners, artisans, hipsters, homeless, prostitutes, jade shops, dim sum restaurants, all coexist to create a burgeoning industry of commerce and creative.

In an effort to capture this diverse cultural makeup, FLUX will embark on a year-long photo project documenting the FACES and PLACES of Chinatown, culminating in a gallery exhibition and lecture on the history of Asian societies and the value of Chinatowns.

Farida’s Must Haves

James Perse Casual White T.

FLUX asked Farida Ong, the owner of Fishloaves Inc. boutique, what are a few basic pieces every girl should have?

White T-Shirt
I think you can put on a T-shirt and still look amazing! If it’s the right material, if it falls on your body correctly, and it’s buttery and flowy, I think you will look good even if it’s just a white T-shirt.

White Dress
You need to have the cute, little white dress for Hawaii. At the same time you shouldn’t be afraid of wearing all black. I think it looks amazing in Hawaii. You just have to pick the right material.

Flannel
Flannel can be really sexy. Especially when it’s kind of loose and big, like a men’s size. I think guys have a different perspective of what is sexy. Really tight or really low. But you shouldn’t dress for them. You should be comfortable. I think if you can be so confident in yourself, that is beautiful. And guys will be able to see that. Plus, they are pretty easy to change anyway!

Happy Aloha Friday

So I was so bummed last night when I got to Fresh Cafe at midnight to find Art & Flea already packed up and done! And I was just remarking to Super C-dubs how much I wanted to snag a copy of photographer Grady Gillian’s new zine, “Aloha Friday.” And what do I find awaiting me in my mailbox Friday morning? A nice new copy of “Aloha Friday” sent by Grady himself, accompanied by a nice little handwritten note (snail mail is awesome!) AND a set of his photo postcards, which are too awesome to write on and send to anyone, really. Thanks, Grady, for making my aloha Friday.
